Just saw Robert in Oakland last night at the Paramont Theater! What a lovely place for a concert! Its a beautiful historic building and is very small and quaint. Very different from what we saw him in at Vegas. They sounded so much better here just because of the accoustics of the building. The ambiance was wonderful. Much more fitting for Robert, and it showed. He seemed much more into it, and the crowd was very appreciative. We had balcony seats this time third row which was an excellent view point! Very small place, so we could see everything! Although the people in the balcony all sat down most of the time. It was interesting to see it from this view compared to the front row we had in Vegas. As nice as that was, it was good to see it from above and see all that took place on the stage.
Anyways, they sounded great and had a few surprises for us! After about 4 songs into the set, Robert starts talking about how good it was to be back in the Bay Area with his old hippy friends, and how much the music that came out of the area influenced him, Skin and Billy, and how rich in culture and diversity the music was. He then said, “So to take us back to that period in time we have a special song we are going play just for you, the Bay Area”! They then proceeded to start playing Jefferson Airplanes White Rabbit!! It was very cool!! And indeed a surprise! A real treat!
Now the setlist may not have been exactly in that order, and I may have forgotten one. But again they sounded awesome!! No Quarter they did a little different from the Vegas show. They all came out on the gandelier drums in the beginning and then went into No Quarter. Also, they played Heartbreaker instead of Babe I’m Going To Leave You and it was really different with alot of African influence that just rocked! All in all a lovely show for a lovely Venue!
Also when they came out for the encore, Robert says, well we have a new addition to the strange sensation and he’ll be out in a minute so bear with us! He then introduced the band, and there was a photographer on stage. They brought out some amplifiers and put them at the front of the stage and Robert says, these came all the way from England. My neighbor made them and asked us to take some pictures with them of people having a good time! So the whole band stood behind the amplifier with backs to the stage so the audience is in the background of the picture the band was all smiles and they snapped the picture. Robert says thanks for our patience, and at their age there is nothing better to do than take pictures with people having a good time! Then they went into The Enchanter.
I didn’t get as lucky this time, but did get to talk to Clive breifly to tell him great show! He recognized us from Vegas and gave us a thumbs up shook his head yes with a huge grin on his face and winked at me. My one friend ran up and gave him a hug thru the window and kiss on the cheek. There were alot of people waiting outside for them to come out so I didn’t think they would sign autographs or anything, but we just wanted to tell them the show was great and say hello.
