July 24, 2005 Greek Theater, Los Angeles, CA

July 24, 2005 Greek Theater, Los Angeles, CA

by Planted in My Mind
It was a perfect summer evening at the Greek. My husband and I had packed a picnic dinner to eat before the concert. The Greek is in Griffith Park, with beautiful trees and lots of picnic tables very close to the entrance to the theatre. We went in 20 minutes before start time and found our seats. They were AWESOME. 6th row center, directly in front of Robert.

The opening band was Little Axe, they were really good. They were comprised of lead and bass guitars with a drummer. Their music was bluesy, funky rock. They played for a half hour or so. During the equipment set up, Tinariwen was being played on the speakers, which is when I started dancing and never stopped for the rest of the evening.

I heard the SIAA remix, and knew things were about to get started. They opened with No Quarter, Robert seemed to appear out of nowhere. The original version is one of my least favorite Zep songs, the new one is fantastic. I brought a pen and piece of paper to write the setlist down, but alas, once the music started I was swept away.

Robert sounded sooo good, his voice is very powerful live. He danced and smiled, and seemed to have a great time with the band, they really do have wonderful chemistry. Justin was great fun to watch, he’s quite a dancer. I forget which song is was, but he wasn’t playing much, and he spent his time doing what looked like a Middle Eastern dance — arms out to the side at shoulder height snapping his fingers and swaying his hips. Around 8.15 pm “Shine It all Around Remix” was played: The place was already full. Before the song ended, I thought: “Oh my God! I’m about to see Robert Plant!” I had so many expectations for this show –being my first Robert Plant concert. I was very excited.

The song ended and the Strange Sensation entered the stage, and went to their instruments: Clive, Justin, John, Skin, Billy… the noise of the crowd was deafning, but I unleashed my howling and yelling until I saw Robert: Black shirt, buttoned (!); silver bracelet in his right wrist; light blue loose fit jeans. Just saw Robert in Oakland last night at the Paramont Theater! What a lovely place for a concert! Its a beautiful historic building and is very small and quaint. Very different from what we saw him in at Vegas. They sounded so much better here just because of the accoustics of the building. The ambiance was wonderful. Much more fitting for Robert, and it showed. He seemed much more into it, and the crowd was very appreciative. We had balcony seats this time third row which was an excellent view point! Very small place, so we could see everything! Although the people in the balcony all sat down most of the time. It was interesting to see it from this view compared to the front row we had in Vegas. As nice as that was, it was good to see it from above and see all that took place on the stage. Continue reading

Well, I just got in from Vegas and man was it great!!

I have to start with our day on friday when we got to the Hilton. After unpacking and getting settled in, we decided to go see what the Center looked like, and see where our seats were in relation to the stage since there were no pictures, and only a drawing of the seating chart. It was a lot different than we expected. Just one huge room with hotel chairs set up on the floor, hundreds of them! And then bleachers on the sides and in back. The stage was pretty small so our front row seats ended up being a little off to the side kind of kitty corner from the stage, but still good and close.

Next we wandered around to see if we could see where Robert would be coming in, in case we could get a glimpse of Robert and say hello on Saturday night before the concert. So we went behind the stage and saw a staircase with the light on. We went up the stairs and ended up in the dressing room!! No one was there, but there were chairs and a couch and three doors to other rooms with chairs and a couch. One room had Roberts name on the door! We went in and it had a chair and couch and a mirror. So it was fun to see where they would be! So we had a good giggle from that one. Continue reading

Opening Band: Little Axe…definitely a band worth checking out. They’re a cross between Living Color and Funkadelic. We saw Justinn standing on the side of the stage enjoying them as well. Good choice.

Incredible - absolutely incredible show. The energy from the audience and the band was quite sympatico. No Quarter this time round was much stronger and louder sounding and really got things going. Right into a fantastic version of Shine It All Around. Robert added some great vocal improvs that created a much more intense feeling. I think you really felt the beauty of the song tonight. Well, my friends, my ears are still ringing and my voice has not returned, but I’m elated and still “up” from last night!

So, the mood was perfect before the show and the venue pleasant. Lots of happy people and even Margaritas to enjoy! I had lots of comments on my “Plant Specialist” Tee and I’m sure if there was a “best tee shirt” contest, I would’ve won! The night was very warm with a breeze and a beautiful crescent moon adorned the sky. It was just right.

Waiting for Robert to come on was exhilirating. As the lights went down, people stood and screamed as we listened to the Shine It All Around Remix. The band came out happy and excited and then… Robert slowly came out and right into No Quarter. Continue reading

I went to the concert with my best friend, and because we are teenagers we were half expecting to be kinda out of place. But surprisingly there were more younger people atttending this concert than those older than us!!!! We arrived at the concert location about 8 or 9 hours before the concert began, because if the opportunity arose we wanted to be there really early.

Later Robert and the Strange Sensation came rolling past us in their black Suvs with the tinted windows–less than 2 metres away from us. We all kinda stared and all I could see was Robert’s silouette in the back seat of the second SUV and i just about fainted. At that point we all ran back into the location in hopes of seeing Robert get out of the car and walk into the arena, but by the time we got close enough to see he was already inside. After that we all stood in line to be allowed into the arena for about 2 hours…my feet were killing me. I had been standing in direct sunlight for hours, but it was all worth it.

Me and my friend were first in line to be allowed in and I refused to listen to her talk as all I wanted to listen to was Robert do his soundcheck. I couldn’t see him but to hear his voice in person and not over a radio or television…I was in absolute heaven.

When we finally allowed in we found our seats and started shaking all over. It could have been part starvation (because I hadn’t eaten at all that day), part thirst, part heat stroke…or just plain excitement over seeing Robert Plant in concert. I’m not entirely sure which one it was. When I calmed down a bit we went out into the pavillion and I bought the Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation black and white baseball type shirt and a pin pack to add to the pin I had gotton for free from the radio station that was hosting the event. We sat and watched the Soundtrack of our Lives perform. They were really good and have actually become one of my favourite bands. I can thank Robert for introducing me to them.

After they were finished it took about another hour for Robert to come on stage. Becuase of reading all of the posts on this site I knew that before Robert and the band comes on stage they play the Shine it All Around remix, so once they started playing that I got all excited. However, they must have played it a good 5 times before they came on stage. Continue reading

The opening act was The Sound Track of Our Lives. They played about 35 minutes, and they were alright. I felt like I was back in the 70’s again, and I expected Grace Slick to show up at any moment. Maybe I would have liked them better if I had not been so anxious to see Robert.

Then we waited from 8:45 until 9:55 before Robert and the Strange Sensation appeared on stage. This was kind of annoying. I figured the band and Robert were somewhere watching the fireworks over the river while the majority of us were in our seats waiting for them (afraid to leave our seats because we didn’t want to miss a minute of the show.) Finally Robert and the band came out at 9:55 p.m. Continue reading
