For once in my life, I’m speechless. I got to the club 4 hours early and endured a couple of well, less than enjoyable bands to secure a standing spot 2nd row, right in front of the microphone (there was no messing around after not seeing him perform for almost 4 years). It was well worth the wait. From the moment he stepped on stage, the energy was electric. I think as someone aptly put it, he fits the adage of not getting older, getting better. Not only does he look great (full of smiles) but his presence on stage is stunning. He has all these wonderful squiggly dance moves, and at one point, looked as though he were doing a little belly dancing Lots of hand gestures and that voice, what can I say. It’s as beautiful and powerful as ever.
When Robert was introducing Shine It All Around, he talked about Mighty Rearranger coming out and then said there are a thousand copies in the car trunk Now if only that were true
The new songs translate brilliantly live. I was very curious to hear Tin Pan Valley, particularly with the poignancy of the words. It’s quite driving, strong rock beat but there’s that bluesy, sort of dark undertones that really support it’s lyrical content. I was happy to see the crowd as enthusiastic to hear them.
Tall Cool One was a lot of fun. Much faster and straight ahead rock and roll than when he performed it in 2002 (from boots I’ve heard).
He didn’t chat too much in between songs but he did comment on how there was a time that music was about music before major labels ruined it all. The crowd (ironically enough all industry folk) cheered enormously.
I think this is the best show I’ve ever seen (and i’ve seen many). I cannot describe adequately the incredible energy and pure joy he has for what he does. He’s so present to the music, the band and the audience.
What I also like is the sense of unity among the band. Each brings a unique perspective and talent and it all works beautifully together.
